In this terra cotta retablo, The Black Madonna of Częstochowa (Polish: Czarna Madonna z Częstochowy is considered ’Miraculous Image of the Immaculate Conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Crystal Mountain’), also known as Our Lady of Częstochowa (Polish: Matka Boska Częstochowska) is a venerated icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. The Virgin Mary is shown as the “Hodegetria” version (meaning “One Who Shows the Way”).
In this ceramic inspired rendition, the artist was inspired by her frequent visits to the Black Madonna Shrine near Pacific, MO and seeing the illustrious work of Brother Bronislaus Luszcz who, built a series of grottos for most of his life of humble found rock, pilgrims sacramentals, and beautiful found gems. The embedded gems represents the beauty and simplicity on constant seeking faith of Mary through Jesus.
This work of art consists of linocut carving and printing into clay, further carve work sprinkled with prayer and holy water along the way. Then glazed with key colors of gunmetal (aged silver), and regal blend of primaries accented by the found bejeweled and mosaic framework.
Made to order-variations will occur in some degree since it is handmade by color, texture, embedded found jewels, and incised line.
