The Pelican Feeds Her Young Retablo

In this terra cotta retablo, the pelican is feeding her young. It was believed to pierce its own breast with its beak and feed its young of its blood. It became a symbol of Christ sacrificing himself for man – and because of this was frequently represented in Catholic artwork as a Eucharistic expression. The main colors are yellow, white, wih accents of red and dark blue. The image has been carefully carved in clay, glazed, over glazed with gold  and finally embedded as mosaic and set in a rustic wooden frame. Completely handmade and one of a kind.
